Weight loss surgery options are all unique, and different procedures may be right for different patients. As a comprehensive provider of bariatric weight loss solutions, we do everything possible to match the right surgical process to each patient based on weight, age, comorbidities and desirable results.

All weight loss surgery procedures have certain risks, complications and benefits. The ultimate result from bariatric surgery depends on the patients' knowledge base and commitment to the program including behavior modification (diet, exercise and lifestyle changes).

Adjustable gastric band/lap band surgery

The Adjustable Gastric Band System or Lap Band surgery is a purely restrictive surgical procedure in which a thin, removable silicone band is placed around the uppermost part of the stomach. This band divides the stomach into two portions, one small upper chamber and one larger lower one. Effectively, this shrinks the size of the available stomach, reducing appetite as patients feel full faster.

Dr. Tiffany Jessee was the first surgeon to perform the Adjustable Gastric Band surgery in Pinellas County, Florida in 2003. She has years of experience, ensuring a successful outcome for every patient.

Sleeve gastrectomy

A sleeve gastrectomy, or gastric sleeve surgery, is a weight loss surgery procedure in which the stomach is reduced to about 15% of its original size. This is accomplished by surgically removing a large portion of the stomach, leaving only a small tubular shaped stomach. There is no bypass of the intestines involved as in gastric bypass surgery. Unlike other weight loss surgeries, a sleeve gastrectomy cannot be reversed or altered once complete.

By reducing the size of the stomach, patients feel full faster and are much more likely to be able to control urges and moderate food consumption. When combined with exercise and a healthy diet, gastric sleeve surgery provides rapid weight loss and is a great alternative for patients with higher BMIs.

In November, 2013, HCA Largo Medical Center announced the availability of da Vinci Robotic Surgery for weight loss surgery procedures. Dr. Jessee performed Pinellas County's first minimally invasive robotic surgery gastric sleeve procedure.

Gastric bypass

Roux-En-Y Gastric Bypass was the first surgical weight loss procedure performed worldwide. This procedure restricts both the amount of food that can be consumed at one time as well as the amount of calories absorbed by the body (element of malabsorption). It is a major operation and is associated with the fastest weight loss. As with any weight loss procedure, it does take commitment and major lifestyle changes.

With Roux-En-Y Gastric Bypass, a small pouch is created from the upper portion of the stomach (approximately 30 ml/2 tablespoons). The small intestine is divided at its upper end and a portion is joined to the pouch. Food enters the pouch and travels directly to the small intestine, therefore bypassing the rest of the stomach - hence the name gastric bypass. Because food travels so quickly into the small intestine many hormones are released, which gives you the sensation of fullness. It has also been demonstrated that your metabolic rate increases, therefore increasing your weight loss.

Gastric balloon

If you are interested in non-surgical opportunities, the gastric balloon can help you lose weight safely and easily.

Instead of surgically adjusting the digestive tract, the gastric balloon is inserted through the mouth in a quick outpatient procedure and inflated using saline solution. Once in place, the gastric balloon will provide a consistent feeling of fullness to minimize food intake, teaching patients healthy habits and the importance of diet. Over time, the gastric balloon promotes healthy, sustainable weight loss. After approximately six months, the balloon will be deflated and removed.
