Weight Loss Surgical Options

Weight loss surgery options are all unique, and different procedures may be right for different patients. As a comprehensive provider of bariatric weight loss solutions, we do everything possible to match the right surgical process to each patient based on weight, gender, age, and expected results.

Weight Loss Surgery Options

All weight loss surgery procedures have certain risks, complications and benefits. The ultimate result from bariatric surgery depends on how much education the patient receives from their surgeon, their commitment to diet, a customized exercise routine, and their bariatric surgeon's experience.

Our surgical offerings have been refined over decades of practice, offering safe, effective results for each patient. We utilize the most advanced surgical techniques as well, both to facilitate healing and to reduce the risk of complications.

At Sun Coast Bariatrics, we offer several weight loss surgery options to help you meet your weight loss goals.

Adjustable Gastric Band/Lap Band Surgery

The Adjustable Gastric Band System or Lap Band surgery is a purely restrictive surgical procedure in which a thin, removable band is placed around the uppermost part of the stomach. This band divides the stomach into two portions, one small upper chamber and one larger lower one. Effectively, this shrinks the size of the available stomach, reducing appetite as patients feel full faster. When combined with exercise, this surgical procedure can be extremely effective, helping patients to lose most or all of their excess weight.

We are proud to provide two options for those interested in gastric banding:

Dr. Tiffany Jessee was the first surgeon to perform the Adjustable Gastric Band surgery in Pinellas County, Florida in 2003. She has years of experience, ensuring a successful outcome for every patient.

Sleeve Gastrectomy

A sleeve gastrectomy, or gastric sleeve surgery, is a weight loss surgery procedure in which the stomach is reduced to about 15% of its original size. This is accomplished by surgically removing a large portion of the stomach, leaving only a small sleeve-shaped band. There is no bypass of the intestines involved as in gastric bypass surgery. Unlike other weight loss surgeries, a sleeve gastrectomy cannot be reversed or altered once complete.

By reducing the size of the stomach, patients feel full faster and are much more likely to be able control urges and moderate food consumption. When combined with exercise and a healthy diet, gastric sleeve surgery provides rapid weight loss and is a great alternative for patients with higher BMIs.

Gastric Balloon

If you are interested in non-surgical opportunities, the Orbera gastric balloon can help you lose weight safely and easily.

Instead of surgically adjusting the digestive tract, Orbera is inserted through the mouth in a quick outpatient procedure and inflated using saline solution. Once in place, Orbera will provide a consistent feeling of fullness to minimize food intake, teaching patients healthy habits and the importance of diet. Over time, Orbera promotes healthy, sustainable weight loss. After approximately six months, the balloon will be deflated and removed.
