SunCoast Bariatrics Welcomes Dr. Bharti Shetye

We're happy to welcome Dr. Bharti Shetye, M.D. to our bariatric clinic in St. Petersburg, Florida, where she has been appointed to the position of Medical Director of Sun Coast Bariatrics. Affectionately known as "Dr. Abby" by her patients, she is a dedicated obesity medical specialist who is passionate about improving the lives of people living with obesity through comprehensive medical care.
About "Dr. Abby"
Dr. Bharti Shetye hails from Mumbai, India, where she earned her medical degree from the Seth G.S. Medical College & KEM Hospital. Following graduation, she pursued post-graduated training at Unity Hospital in Rochester, New York and Good Samaritan Hospital (an affiliate of Johns Hopkins University) in Baltimore, Maryland.
Dr. Abby is one of only a few female obesity doctors who are currently certified by both the American Board of Obesity Medicine and the American Board of Internal Medicine. She is active in a number of professional associations including the Obesity Medicine Association, Obesity Action Coalition, The Obesity Society, and the American Society of Bariatric and Metabolic Surgeons. She has extensive experience working with, and advocating for, patients who struggle with chronic obesity.
Dr. Abby has served with the Florida Department of Health in Pinellas County as the director of their award-winning obesity care clinic, and she has earned a number of accolades for her tireless efforts to enhance the quality and availability of obesity treatment for all patients.
According to Dr. Abby, "Not treating obesity in a patient with diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidemia is the equivalent of not treating hypertension in a patient with coronary heart disease".
Dr. Abby’s Approach to Bariatric Care
As an obesity medical specialist, Dr. Shetye has a unique skill set that she uses to bridge the gap between bariatric surgeons, family doctors, and other members of a patient's' care team. In her recent interview with the American Board of Obesity Medicine, she explains the role of the obesity medical specialist, and how working with a specialized obesity medicine physician can support positive long-term outcomes for bariatric surgery patients.
According to Dr. Abby, she works closely with her patients to:
Address concerns related cardiovascular disease, Type 2 diabetes, hypertension, hormonal imbalance, and other issues that are linked chronic obesity
Manage medications during both the pre-operative and post-operative phase of the weight loss journey
Identify and act to prevent post-operative weight gain
Co-ordinate care between all members of the medical weight loss team
Facilitate monthly bariatric support groups
Here at Sun Coast Bariatrics, Dr. Abby works with our bariatric surgeon, Dr. Tiffany Jessee, and the rest of our team to ensure our patients receive the best possible medical care. Dr. Abby believes that providing comprehensive, wrap-around care is essential, and she is constantly looking for new and innovative ways to advance her practice as an obesity doctor.
